QUETTA: The Health Department, Government of Balochistan has suspended 73 striking doctors from their services and issued show-cause notice to several others for not joining their duties after the given 24-hour deadline.

Balochistan Health Secretary, Asmatullah Kakar said this while speaking at a press conference at his office here on Saturday.

“The Balochistan Chief Minister Nawab Aslam Raisani has given approval to suspension of 73 striking doctors and in this regard, the Accountant General has been asked to stop releasing salaries to them as they are violating essential service act and rules and regulations,” the health secretary said.

He said earlier, the Balochistan government gave 24-hour deadline to the doctors and asked them to end their strike and join their duties in the hospitals. But the doctors continued their strike. They shut down emergency during Ashura, he said.

Kakar said the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) administration responded positively to the request of the provincial health department that civilian patients be treated at the CMH Quetta, as doctors at public sector hospitals were on strike and not examining and treating patients.

“Commandant CMH Quetta has called in 30 specialist army doctors to treat civilian patients while the provincial health department has provided necessary equipments, laboratory kits and medicines to the CMH Quetta for provision of health facilities to civilian patients,” he said adding that the Balochistan government would bear all medical expenditures of civilian patients to be treated at the CMH Quetta.

The health secretary said action was also being taken against private hospitals, which are functioning without NOC. “About 10 out of 45 private hospitals in Quetta are functioning without NOC,” he said and added that departmental action was being taken to scrutinise the degrees of doctors as some doctors, including senior and specialist doctors, had submitted degrees that have been gotten from Vienna, Kabul and Russia. He said the doctors of management cadre would soon perform duties in emergency of hospitals.
